Adult Catechism Classes

To provide the necessary instruction to the catechumen so that having become familiar with the basics of Orthodoxy, they may, if they so choose, continue as members of the Church, and grow to love their faith and make it who they are. To instill in them the desire to seek out God within the community of believers; to enable them to practice prayer and the Orthodox faith with total commitment, for the salvation of their soul and for the Glory of God.

Purpose:

To help the Catechumen to familiarize themselves with the Orthodox Church, its history, structure, beliefs and practices.

Goal:

To provide the necessary instruction to the catechumen so that having become familiar with the basics of Orthodoxy, they may, if they so choose, continue as members of the Church, and grow to love their faith and make it who they are. To instill in them the desire to seek out God within the community of believers; to enable them to practice prayer and the Orthodox faith with total commitment, for the salvation of their soul and for the Glory of God.

Structure of the Class:

Total of 10 weeks (Sessions), one day a week, Thursdays at 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm.

Requirements and Expectations:

Please complete the Registration form as completely as possible. Also, keep in mind that regular attendance is very important. If you know that you will miss a class please let one of the priests know so that we can reschedule the session with you, at your convenience. Proper respect for others and for the things of the Church is also very important.

There is no cost attached to this program. Some materials for your use will be distributed by the instructors, and others will be available to you in the libraries of the Church and the priests. A short bibliography is also provided to you so that you can explore the Orthodox faith at home, at your leisure. We highly recommend that you continue reading during, and after, the completion of the program.

Finally, even though you will not be required to become a steward of an Orthodox community, we strongly encourage you to do so. Participating fully in the Orthodox faith means that the faithful attach themselves to the worshipping community of their choice, and while attending the prayer services and receiving the blessings of God, they also, according to their ability, contribute to the upkeep and support of the church through their time, talents and treasure.

Baptism and Chrismation:

At the completion of the 10-week Catechism program, the participants may decide that they would like to join the Orthodox Church, by seeking the blessing to be baptized, or chrismated, depending on the situation. The program does not guarantee anyone acceptance into the Orthodox Church. You are neither expected, nor are you promised, that you will be baptized or chrismated upon completion of the program. Becoming Orthodox is a process; a journey.

Please speak to one of the priests to help guide you in this decision.
