On Sunday, June 7, at 1:00 pm, at the Olive Garden Restaurant located in the Eastridge Shopping Center (2226 Eastridge Loop, San Jose, CA 95122), our adult students attending our online Greek Language classes will gather once again to celebrate their learning achievements, to embrace the joy of a summer break in Greece, and to look ahead to the new academic year beginning in September 2026.

This graduation celebration serves as an opportunity to strengthen collaboration among our students, honor their dedication to the continuous study of the Greek Language and Culture, and highlight the ongoing contribution of the Center of Hellenic Education to the educational and spiritual life of our parish.

SATURDAY OF THE SOULS
A Saturday of the Souls (Psychosavato) service will be on Saturday, May 30th with Orthros beginning at 8:30am followed by the Liturgy at 9:30am and Memorial. You can drop the names of deceased Orthodox Christian family members, relatives and friends in a special, marked box in the Narthex and you can bring a small dish of kollyva to the service.

ST. NICHOLAS BASKETBALL - HIGH SCHOOL BOYS THREE-PEAT AS CHAMPS! ELEMENTARY BOYS SHOW DETERMINATION IN A THRILLING SEMI-FINAL
The 2026 Spring Season wrapped up with a great day of basketball last Saturday. The day saw the High School Boys come out on top as 3-time repeat champs with a win over Annunciation San Francisco. The elementary boys continued to thrill with semi-final game effort that was within reach in the final minutes, but fell short. The Elementary Girls and MS Girls and Boys teams also lost in their semi-final games, but continued to display great effort and heart. Our community is extremely proud of all the players, coaches, and fans for their effort, support, and sportsmanship.

The End of Season BBQ was held this past Wednesday with great attendance. Congrats to 3rd grader Diana Brown for winning our skills competition and to Evangelos Papadimitriou for winning our 3-pt contest.

Girls Elementary (2-4, 3rd place)

The elementary girls had a great season with 5 new players joining some returning players. Look out for our 4 third graders who will be a force as they mature. Girls Middle School (1-5, 3rd place)

The middle school girls is a young but experienced team that made huge strides in the eyes of the coaches even when it didn't translate into game scores against older teams. They will be returning almost all of their players next year and look to assert themselves in the '27 season. The elementary boys were a committed team of only 7. Led by our two 5th graders, but bolstered by the rest they showed up to play every game and gave the other teams fits. The High School Boys capped off an undefeated season with two wins last Saturday against Holy Cross (Semi) and Annunciation (Final). The team is led by the 3-time Champion graduating senior class and a full roster that will take over the leadership role next year. Congrats to our graduates and our HS Champs. ST. NICHOLAS BASKETBALL PROGRAM - ST. NICHOLAS NABS TWO WINS AFTER EASTER
The High School Boys won a big game against fellow unbeaten Ascension and are on the doorstep of the regular season top seed. The Middle School boys got ahead to capture a comfortable win against Holy Cross2. Two games left before the playoffs with SJ travelling this weekend and 7 games in the Community Center hosted between Fri May 1st and Sunday May 3rd

ST. NICHOLAS LUMINARIES
Saint Nicholas will have our annual Anastasi Luminaries. The Luminaries will be placed and lit at dusk on Holy Saturday evening and remain illuminated throughout the Anastasi Service, creating a path of loving memory of those who have left us, and for hope for those living whom we wish to give strength and love.

An invitation is extended to all to participate by providing the names and contributions either online (see below), by email at churchoffice@saintnicholas.org or by phone at 408-246-2770.

AGAPE SERVICE GOSPEL READERS
At the Agape Vespers, celebrated the Sunday of Pascha morning at 11:00 am, we will have the Gospel reading in many different languages. This is the only case within the year that lay-people, men and women of all ages, are allowed to read the Gospel reading in the church. ST. NICHOLAS BASKETBALL PROGRAM - HIGH SCHOOL BOYS STAY UNDEFEATED!
Our High School Boys remain undefeated with a convincing win against a tough Annunciation team, setting up a second half matchup with the winner possibly netting the top playoff seed. Our other basketball teams faced stiff competition on the road, and look to bounce back after our Easter break. No basketball activity during Holy Week. Kalo Pascha!

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION - SUNDAY, MARCH 29TH

The Greek School (Center of Hellenic Education) warmly invites you to join us in honoring the historic Greek Independence Day (March 25, 1821) and the Annunciation of the Theotokos. Our celebration will take place at the Community Center on Sunday, March 29th, immediately following the Divine Liturgy.

JoIn us for a traditional Lenten feast featuring golden-fried bakaliaro (cod) paired with a smooth, garlicky sauce (skordalia), beet salad, baked gigantes (baked beans), and fish sticks with French fries for our younger guests. A delicious celebration of timeless flavors and cherished tradition. All proceeds will support our Greek School.

The event will begin with the singing of the national anthems, followed by a special program where our students will present plays, songs, poems, and readings to honor the heroes of the Greek Independence and the Annunciation of Theotokos. We will also proudly present Greek Language Exam diplomas to our participating students.

LIVE SCAN (FINGER PRINTING) FOR ALL STAFF/VOLUNTEERS THAT WORK WITH YOUTH - SUNDAY, APRIL 5TH

With the new California State law on mandated reporting for all youth staff workers/volunteers, Saint Nicholas is required to comply with background checks, training (annually) and fingerprinting. We are happy that many of our youth staff workers/volunteers have already complied with the mandate.

However, for those who have not yet completed the process, Saint Nicholas is graciously offering another fingerprinting service on Sunday, April 5th from 11:30am - 12:30pm in the church office conference room - enter by the side door. Important: only those that have fulfilled the Archdiocese online account set up, Code of Conduct, background check, and training module will be allowed to get fingerprinted.

We encourage all youth staff workers/volunteers, who have not already done so, to comply with these legal requirements.

ORATORICAL FESTIVAL AT SAINT NICHOLAS - THIS SUNDAY
The 2026 St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival is just around the corner! Hosted by the Department of Religious Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, this festival is a fantastic opportunity for our youth to express their faith, share their thoughts, and shine on stage.

The Oratorical Festival is on Sunday, March 22, 2026 at Saint Nicholas Church. On this special day, all our participating children will present their speeches. Let's fill the room with support and encouragement for our outstanding youth. Your presence means the world to them; together, we can make it a day to remember!

GREEK FLAG RAISING - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25TH
The annual Greek Flag Raising, in recognition of Greek Independence Day, will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at 5:00pm at the San Jose City Hall Plaza, 200 E Santa Clara Street. Facilitated by AHEPA Silicon Valley Chapter 251and Daughters of Penelope Daphne #29, the ceremony will be hosted by Councilmember Pam Foley.

There will also be a reception on the City Hall Tower 17th floor immediately following the ceremony compliments of the Order of AHEPA & Daughters of Penelope San Jose Chapters.

Please note that in order to get validated parking, you need to be in the City Hall Garage before 5 pm. After 5pm, it’s locked and you can only exit the parking structure. The garage is located off of 6th Street at 45 S Sixth St., San Jose, 95113.

Who We’re Looking For: 3 young adults (ages 18–24), high school seniors to college-aged individuals; creative, curious, and willing to learn; comfortable collaborating and communicating regularly; reliable and accountable—this role is public-facing.

What You’ll Do: Research, film, edit, and share content; work with platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter/X; help amplify Saint Nicholas’ voice online through storytelling.

Experience: No prior content creation experience required. We’re looking for people eager to learn and grow!

BASKETBALL PROGRAM – HIGH SCHOOL BOYS START THE SEASON WITH A THRILLING OT WIN; 3 TEAMS PLAYING IN SAN JOSE THIS SUNDAY
It was a great start to the 2026 season with 5 games in San Jose, capped off with a nail-biting High School Boys game against St. Gregory that saw the two-time defending Champs tested, but prevail in OT with a game-winning put back by Dionysis with 0:02 left. The Elementary Boys also started their season with a convincing win led by the two Vassilis.

YOUTH BASKETBALL - SPRING LEAGUE KICKS OFF SUNDAY WITH ALL 5 TEAMS PLAYING IN SAN JOSE
Last Sunday we held 3 Showcase games featuring boys and girls players from our five teams competing against each other. Thanks to our families for coming out and supporting our players. League games start this Sunday the 8th with all 5 teams playing in the Community Center beginning at 2pm with the Elementary Girls. Come and cheer on our teams!

COMMEMORATION OF THE MIRACLE OF KOLLYVA WROUGHT BY ST. THEODORE THE TYRO
The Commemoration of the Miracle of Kollyva Wrought by Saint Theodore the Tyro will be held on Saturday, February 28th with Orthros beginning at 8:30am followed by the Liturgy at 9:30am.

On the first Saturday of Lent we commemorate the miracle of the koliva. Please join us and should you wish to bring koliva, it will be blessed with the traditional prayer on that day. However, on this particular feast day, there is no commemoration of the names of the departed.

Pleasee note that the next Psychosavato will be on Saturday, May 30th.

SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY
This coming Sunday, March 1st, we will observe the Sunday of Orthodoxy, a significant day in the Greek Orthodox faith commemorating the restoration of the veneration of icons. This day is especially meaningful as it honors the triumph of our faith and the importance of icons in our worship and spiritual lives during our Lenten journey.

As part of the observance, we will hold a procession. We'd like all children to bring one of their icons from home to participate in this meaningful tradition. Father James and Father Nebojsa will provide specific instructions on how the procession will proceed based on weather conditions on that day.

We look forward to sharing this important day with you and your children as we continue our Lenten journey together.

We’re forming a small team of digital storytellers to help create and share content for the Saint Nicholas Festival with the hope of continuing to grow the church’s online presence beyond the festival. If you’re interested in media, storytelling, or digital ministry and want hands-on experience this is a great opportunity to be part of something meaningful.

Who We’re Looking For: 3 young adults (ages 18–24), high school seniors to college-aged individuals; creative, curious, and willing to learn; comfortable collaborating and communicating regularly; reliable and accountable—this role is public-facing.

What You’ll Do: Research, film, edit, and share content; work with platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter/X; help amplify Saint Nicholas’ voice online through storytelling.

Experience: No prior content creation experience required. We’re looking for people eager to learn and grow!

NEW CLASS: BASIC GUIDE TO EASTERN ORTHODOX THEOLOGY

COMMEMORATION OF THE MIRACLE OF KOLLYVA WROUGHT BY ST. THEODORE THE TYRO
The Commemoration of the Miracle of Kollyva Wrought by Saint Theodore the Tyro will be held on Saturday, February 28th with Orthros beginning at 8:30am followed by the Liturgy at 9:30am.

On the first Saturday of Lent we commemorate the miracle of the koliva. Please join us and should you wish to bring koliva, it will be blessed with the traditional prayer on that day. However, on this particular feast day, there is no commemoration of the names of the departed.

Pleasee note that the next Psychosavato will be on Saturday, May 30th.

FOLK DANCE FESTIVAL (FDF) 2026
The 49th Metropolis of San Francisco Greek Orthodox Folk Dance and Choral Festival (FDF) took place in Phoenix, Arizona. Hearty congratulations are to be made to our stellar dance groups for their outstanding performances. A big thank you goes out to the parents, grandparents, extended family members and friends who gave their time and support to our dance groups. A very special round of thanks and appreciation goes to the Dance Program leaders, directors, musicians, group parent representatives, costume closet assistants, costume makers, and the clergy for making our dance groups' participation possible.

The FDF Board of Directors recognized and thanked the FDF judges for their service and dedication to travel and work at FDF which included our own Sofia Efstratiou Nicolaou. In addition, a warm thank you to Laurie Sahines, FDF's Northern California Parent Representative, for her support.

The St Nicholas youth basketball program is starting team practices for the Spring '26 season. First games are Sunday March 1st. New players of all skill and experience levels welcome. There is especially a need to fill out our Elementary boys roster; calling on all 2nd grade through 5th grade boys come join us this Thursday Feb 5th at 6:45-8:00 in the Community Center for practice. The St Nicholas youth basketball program is starting team practices for the Spring '26 season. Last year we fielded 5 teams: Boys and Girls Elementary, Boys and Girls Middle School, and Boys High School with over 40 participants. Congrats to our Elementary Girls and High School Boys on winning the League Championship!

Boys Elementary (3rd-5th Grade) are practicing weekly Mondays at 5:15-6:30 (note Feb 2nd moved to Thur Feb 5th at same time)

Girls Elementary (3rd-5th Grade) and Middle School (6th-8th Grade) are practicing weekly Mondays at 6:30-7:45 (note Feb 2nd moved to Thur Feb 5th at same time)

Kids will have an opportunity for on-court activities during and after the game. We hope to replicate a great time that we had last year. As we come upon the Christmas holidays, it is time to start planning for our parish’s joyous tradition of greeting one another through the mailing of our Community Christmas Card.
