Finding of the Relics of Cyrus and John the Unmercenaries
These Saints lived during the years of Diocletian. Saint Cyrus was from Alexandria, and Saint John was from Edessa of Mesopotamia. Because of the persecution of that time, Cyrus fled to the Gulf of Arabia, where there was a small community of monks. John, who was a soldier, heard of Cyrus' fame and came to join him.
Henceforth, they passed their life working every virtue, and healing every illness and disease freely by the grace of Christ; hence their title of "Unmercenaries." They heard that a certain woman, named Athanasia, had been apprehended together with her three daughters, Theodora, Theoctiste, and Eudoxia, and taken to the tribunal for their confession... show more

“Seek the good of the city”
The Roman centurion in today’s Gospel reading shocks Jesus, because the centurion has more faith than anyone in Israel. Most modern readers are less shocked, because we do not understand what a Roman centurion was. A centurion was an army officer whose authority extended over 100 men (a century), which was a basic unit in the Roman military. Roman centurions were the tip of the Roman spear of occupation over the Jewish people. The Roman army was not only respected and feared; it was often violent and oppressive. Ancient inscriptions tell us, for instance, how Roman soldiers would force local civilians into carrying their packs or weapons. Jesus seems to have precisely this in mind when he... show more

On the first day of the week at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking spices, which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how He told you, while He was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they... show more

“Our Finances and our Faith”
When we say in English that someone has “spilled the beans,” we do not mean that someone has poured a can of legumes on the floor. We mean someone has shared private information.
Every language has idiomatic phrases meant to be understood in a figurative or metaphorical sense. Because they are not to be taken literally, native speakers understand them clearly, but non-native speakers might be puzzled. Today’s Gospel reading contains just such an idiom that was common in Hebrew when Jesus says, “The eye is the lamp of the body.
So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.” At first blush, the statement seems to focus on the sense of sight, or perhaps spiritual... show more

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.
After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. After this He appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table and He upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw Him after He had risen. And He said to them, "Go... show more

The Prophet Elisseus, the son of Saphat, was from the town of Abel-me-oul and had been a husbandman.
In the year 908 B.C., at God's command, the Prophet Elias anointed him to be Prophet in his stead. This happened while Elisseus was plowing his land, having twelve oxen under yoke. Straightway, Elisseus slew the oxen and cooked them, using the wooden plough and the other instruments of husbandry as firewood; then he gave the oxen as food to the people. Bidding farewell to his parents, he followed Elias and served him until the latter was taken up as it were into Heaven (see July 20).

“Be Fishers of Men…” Fr. George Parsenios
When Jesus calls his disciples in today’s Gospel reading, he teaches us something very important about our own life as disciples. At first, his comment about the disciples becoming “fishers of men” seems like a clever play on words.
They are fishermen, devoted to gathering fish, but they will now become “fishers of men,” devoted to gathering people into the Church. This play on words is more than casual. It teaches us that our service to Jesus does not mean that we must acquire some new skill or personality. Jesus calls us as we are and then uses the abilities, we already have to serve him. A fisherman who knows how to collect fish will now use those skills to... show more

The Sunday of All Saints
Honouring the friends of God with much reverence, the Prophet-King David says, "But to me, exceedingly honourable are Thy friends, O Lord" (Ps. 138:16). And the divine Apostle, recounting the achievements of the Saints, and setting forth their memorial as an example that we might turn away from earthly things and from sin, and emulate their patience and courage in the struggles for virtue, says, "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every burden, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Heb. 12:1).

“Hate your father and mother…”
Today’s Gospel reading hits our ears strangely. The words of Jesus contain a very hard saying. Most of us are raised
in Christian families, and Jesus puzzles us by teaching that our commitment to him requires us to deny our families. When the Gospel of Luke shares this same material, Jesus says not only to deny our families, but to hate them (Luke 14:26). Why does Jesus say this?
To answer this question, we must understand a major difference between the ancient world and the modern one. Religion was not a private choice in antiquity, and religious diversity did not mean then what it means now. To be born in a city meant to worship the gods of that city. To be born into a family... show more

Entering into the house where they gathered, they went into the upper room, and there they persevered in prayer and supplication, awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit, as their Divine Teacher had promised them. Only after Pentecost did the disciples fully understand the mission of Jesus and become fully empowered to share the Gospel throughout the world. The Reading is from John 20:19-23
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were gathered, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Fathers of the 1st Council
The heresiarch Arius was a Libyan by race and a protopresbyter of the Church of Alexandria. In 315, he began to blaspheme against the Son and Word of God, saying that He is not true God, consubstantial with the Father, but is rather a work and creation, alien to the essence and glory of the Father, and that there was a time when He was not. This frightful blasphemy shook the faithful of Alexandria.
Alexander, his Archbishop, after trying in vain to correct him through admonitions, cut him off from communion and finally in a local council deposed him in the year 321. Yet neither did the blasphemer wish to be corrected, nor did he cease sowing the deadly tares of his heretical teachings; but writing... show more

Simon Peter, Thomas, called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach, yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any fish?"
