Marina the Great Martyr of Antioch

This Martyr lived during the reign of Claudius II (268-270). She was from Pisidia of Cilicia and was the only daughter of a certain priest of the idols. On being orphaned by her mother, she was handed over to a certain woman who instructed her in the Faith of Christ.

When she was fifteen years old, she was apprehended by the ruler of Olmbrius, and when asked her name, homeland, and faith, she answered: "My name is Marina; I am the offspring of the Pisidia; I call upon the Name of my Lord Jesus Christ." Because of this she endured bonds, imprisonment, and many whippings, and was finally beheaded in the year 270. Saint Marina is especially invoked for deliverance from demonic possession.... show more

Proclus & Hilary the Martyrs of Ancyra

These Martyrs contested in Ancyra in 106, during the reign of the Emperor Trajan. Saint Proclus was seized as a Christian and, confessing his faith, was burned on his sides and belly, was hung upon a beam with heavy stones tied to his feet, and finally was taken away to be shot with arrows.

As he was being led forth, his nephew Hilary encountered him and greeted him, and was himself seized. After his uncle had been slain with arrows, Hilary, because he would not deny Christ, was tormented, then beheaded.

“Christians are a body of believers…”

In an age of “Internet Orthodoxy,” many people try to live the Christian life without joining an actual Church community. In today’s epistle reading, however, St. Paul teaches that the Christian life requires us to join a fellowship of believers. We see this in three different ways.

First, no single person possesses every Christian virtue. Today’s reading opens by explaining that each one of us receives a different gift in proportion to God’s grace. Some people excel at serving their neighbors humbly, while others serve as leaders with gifts for exhortation and encouragement. One person may “be constant in prayer,” while another person has the gift of teaching.... show more

The Reading is from Luke 24:36-53

At that time, having risen from the dead, Jesus went up and stood among His disciples and said to them, "Peace be with you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; handle Me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. Athanasius of Mount Athos

Saint Athanasius had Trebizond for his homeland. He first entered the monastic life on the mountain called Kymaeos or Kyminas, which is in Mysia of Bithynia, then he went to Mount Athos and founded a large monastery, which is known as the Great Lavra.

He became so renowned for his virtue that from Rome, Calabria, Georgia, and elsewhere, rulers, men of wealth and nobility, abbots, and even bishops came to him and were subject to him. When the time for his departure was at hand, God revealed to him how it would take place, so that he was able to instruct his spiritual children not to be troubled when it should come to pass.

“I’m Only Human …”

I’m only human. We all say this when we make a mistake, and it’s not a terrible thing to say. Only God is perfect, and if we torture ourselves for every error, we might easily become neurotic and full of self-loathing. So it’s not a terrible thing, when we do something wrong, to say, “Hey, I’m only human.”

From another perspective, though, the phrase presents some problems. If we think that being human means being weak and always falling into error, then we diminish and misunderstand our humanity. Jesus Christ, after all, united human nature with God. For those who have faith in Christ, to be human no longer means to be frail and helpless, but to strive for holiness and the perfection... show more

Finding of the Relics of Cyrus and John the Unmercenaries

These Saints lived during the years of Diocletian. Saint Cyrus was from Alexandria, and Saint John was from Edessa of Mesopotamia. Because of the persecution of that time, Cyrus fled to the Gulf of Arabia, where there was a small community of monks. John, who was a soldier, heard of Cyrus' fame and came to join him.

Henceforth, they passed their life working every virtue, and healing every illness and disease freely by the grace of Christ; hence their title of "Unmercenaries." They heard that a certain woman, named Athanasia, had been apprehended together with her three daughters, Theodora, Theoctiste, and Eudoxia, and taken to the tribunal for their confession... show more

“Seek the good of the city”

The Roman centurion in today’s Gospel reading shocks Jesus, because the centurion has more faith than anyone in Israel. Most modern readers are less shocked, because we do not understand what a Roman centurion was. A centurion was an army officer whose authority extended over 100 men (a century), which was a basic unit in the Roman military. Roman centurions were the tip of the Roman spear of occupation over the Jewish people. The Roman army was not only respected and feared; it was often violent and oppressive. Ancient inscriptions tell us, for instance, how Roman soldiers would force local civilians into carrying their packs or weapons. Jesus seems to have precisely this in mind when he... show more

“Our Finances and our Faith”

When we say in English that someone has “spilled the beans,” we do not mean that someone has poured a can of legumes on the floor. We mean someone has shared private information.

Every language has idiomatic phrases meant to be understood in a figurative or metaphorical sense. Because they are not to be taken literally, native speakers understand them clearly, but non-native speakers might be puzzled. Today’s Gospel reading contains just such an idiom that was common in Hebrew when Jesus says, “The eye is the lamp of the body.

So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.” At first blush, the statement seems to focus on the sense of sight, or perhaps spiritual... show more

Straightway, Elisseus slew the oxen and cooked them, using the wooden plough and the other instruments of husbandry as firewood; then he gave the oxen as food to the people. “Be Fishers of Men…” Fr. George Parsenios

When Jesus calls his disciples in today’s Gospel reading, he teaches us something very important about our own life as disciples. At first, his comment about the disciples becoming “fishers of men” seems like a clever play on words.

They are fishermen, devoted to gathering fish, but they will now become “fishers of men,” devoted to gathering people into the Church. This play on words is more than casual. It teaches us that our service to Jesus does not mean that we must acquire some new skill or personality. Jesus calls us as we are and then uses the abilities, we already have to serve him. A fisherman who knows how to collect fish will now use those skills to... show more

Prayer, fasting, vigil and all other Christian practices, however good they may be in themselves, do not constitute the aim of our Christian life, although they serve as the indispensable means of reaching this end. The true aim of our Christian life consists in the acquisition of the Holy Spirit of God.

St. Seraphim of Sarov
The Acquisition of the Holy Spirit: Chapter 3, The Little Russian Philokalia Vol. 1; Saint Herman of Alaska Brotherhood pg. 79, 19th century

Within the visible world, man is as it were a second world; and the same is true of thought within the intelligible world. For man is the herald of heaven and earth, and of all that is in them; while thought interprets the intellect and sense perception, and all that pertains... show more

The Sunday of All Saints

Honouring the friends of God with much reverence, the Prophet-King David says, "But to me, exceedingly honourable are Thy friends, O Lord" (Ps. 138:16). To answer this question, we must understand a major difference between the ancient world and the modern one. Religion was not a private choice in antiquity, and religious diversity did not mean then what it means now. To be born in a city meant to worship the gods of that city. To be born into a family... show more
